Work made at The Corning Museum of Glass will be presented at Design Miami/ this year. Cristina Grajales Gallery in cooperation with Paula Cooper Gallery is presenting, A Boy From Texas, a solo exhibition of recent sculpture and design by Robert Wilson.

Wilson worked with our team of glassmakers in Corning to develop an installation in blown and cast glass reflecting on nature, fragility, and rebirth, in memory of his childhood in Texas and early theater works and installations developed in rural America.

A Boy From Texas presents an installation of cast truncated pyramids, and hand-blown and flameworked deer made at The Corning Museum of Glass. “The fragility of the translucent deer stands in counterpoint to the ancient geometry and seemingly infinite depth of the pyramids,” the Cristina Grajales Gallery said in a press release. “This tension sustains them, like the sole inhabitants of an endless landscape.”

The work is inspired by Wilson’s time spent in the Texas woods with his father. While Wilson didn’t enjoy going deer hunting, he relished his early mornings in the stillness of the woods, waiting for the deer to appear. “I always liked being alone, having this space,” he said, “a place for my mind to have its own thoughts; perchance to dream. A boy from Texas.”

“We are thrilled to partner with esteemed artist Robert Wilson to present his vision in glass at the nexus of art and design at Design Miami/,” said Steve Gibbs, Senior Manager of Hot Glass Business and Technology Development at The Corning Museum of Glass. “This is the result of a year of collaboration, during which time we worked to gain an understanding of Robert’s world in order to bring his ideas to life. Our glassmaking team here in Corning has great expertise and command of glass as a material, but working with artists like Robert pushes us out of our comfort zones to a place of new sensitivity as we transform concepts into tangible objects.”

A Boy From Texas will be on view in the Cristina Grajales Gallery space at Design Miami/ from December 3-8.
